P14 · Data Visualization & Communication

chart craft, dashboards, stakeholder storytelling

The outward craft: turning results into charts and narratives an audience can trust - visual encodings, chart choice, honest scales, accessible colour, and the communication that carries a finding to a decision.

The analysis was right. The recommendation was sound. The chart on slide 4 had a truncated axis that made a 3% dip look like a collapse, the room reacted to the picture instead of the number, and the meeting decided the wrong thing. No data was faked. The maths was clean. What failed was the last mile — the craft of turning a correct result into a picture and a sentence an audience reads correctly. That mile is this pillar.

The first track is chart craft from the maker's seat. What the eye actually ranks well — position beats length beats angle beats area beats colour — and why that ordering, not taste, decides which encoding to reach for. Choosing the form the task needs (comparison, trend, distribution, part-of-whole, relationship) and knowing when a plain table wins. Honest scales, axes and legends; colour that a colour-blind reader can still separate. It closes on the misleading-charts workshop — truncation, cherry-picked windows, area tricks — each one built and then repaired, so you learn the lies from the inside and can name them on sight.

The second track is communication: getting the finding to land. Lead with the answer, not the method; the "so what" test; framing the same result for an executive and for a peer. Dashboards that earn every tile instead of decaying into noise. Presenting uncertainty honestly — an interval, a fan chart, "we don't know yet" as a legitimate finding. And writing about numbers without letting the prose claim more than the data supports.
