Tribunes et chroniques : la gradation du ton

The B2 reading paper rarely asks what does the author think in black-and-white terms. It asks you to place a text on a scale — enthusiastic, favourable-with-reservations, neutral, sceptical, hostile — and the distractors are simply the neighbouring positions on that scale. Reading tone is therefore a calibration exercise, not a detection one.

French opinion writing signals its position with a compact set of verbs and formulas, worth knowing as a ladder:

Two refinements the items will press on:

1. Praise followed by gardons la tête froide is not praise withdrawn — it is measured support. The distractor "hostile" overshoots; the distractor "enthusiastic without reserve" undershoots.
2. Irony inverts the surface. « Que le lecteur pardonne notre enthousiasme mesuré » after three broken promises is scepticism wearing a smile. Count the facts the author lines up: three announcements, zero bottles — the arithmetic carries the tone.

You will grade four texts: a cautious endorsement of the four-day week, an ironic sigh about the ever-returning glass consigne, an indignant tribune against funding heritage by scratch cards, and a ranking exercise on three reactions to an urban cable-car.
