Imparfait ou passé composé : le choix

P50.verb-systems.20 · Audience: guest, language-pro, it-ml

Unité GR-50 · campagne 26 · GR-48 vous a appris à entendre lequel a été dit ; ici vous choisissez lequel dire.

Hearing the difference between je l'ai lavée and je la lavais is a recognition skill, and GR-48 drills it. Producing the right one is a different skill, and no rule about -é against -ais will help you: both forms are correct French. What decides is what you are doing with the sentence.

The frame and the event

Imagine a photograph and a gesture inside it. The photograph is the imparfait — the weather, the room, the mood, what was already going on, what used to happen every week. The gesture is the passé composé — the thing that happened, once, and moved the story forward.

Il faisait nuit et la rue était vide — photograph. Une voiture s'est arrêtée devant l'immeuble — gesture. Neither tense is more past than the other. They are two camera angles on the same moment.

The interruption is the pair

The most useful shape in the language puts both in one sentence: an imparfait that was running, and a passé composé that cut across it.

Je dormais quand l'orage a éclaté. · Pendant qu'elle traversait, son téléphone a sonné.

Reverse the tenses and you have said something different, not something wrong — so the pair has to be chosen, never guessed.

What the adverbs tell you

Some words point hard at one tense. D'habitude, tous les lundis, à l'époque, autrefois, chaque été want the imparfait: they describe a habit, and a habit is a frame. Soudain, tout à coup, ce jour-là, en 2009, trois fois, deux heures plus tard want the passé composé: they date an event or count it.

The counting one catches everybody. Repetition alone does not call for the passé composé — nous allions à la mer tous les étés is a habit. But a counted repetition does: nous sommes allés trois fois à la mer. Three times is a bounded quantity, and a bounded quantity is an event.

The verbs that change meaning

A handful of state verbs mean one thing as a frame and another as an event. This is not a nuance; it is a different verb in English.

  • savoir — je savais, I knew · j'ai su, I found out
  • pouvoir — je pouvais, I was able to · j'ai pu, I managed to
  • vouloir — je voulais, I wanted · je n'ai pas voulu, I refused
  • connaître — je connaissais, I knew · j'ai connu, I met
  • devoir — je devais, I was supposed to · j'ai dû, I had to, or: I must have
  • avoir peur — j'avais peur, I was afraid · j'ai eu peur, I got a fright

Read the list once as pairs and the logic underneath appears: the imparfait gives the state, the passé composé gives the moment the state was entered. J'ai su is the instant the knowing started. J'ai pu is the instant the ability was cashed in.

When you are stuck

Ask what the sentence is for. If it sets up, describes, or explains — imparfait. If it advances, reports, or counts — passé composé. If you are narrating and the story stops moving, you have probably slipped into the imparfait and stayed there.

Going further

A bounded duration takes the passé composé, however long: J'ai habité à Lyon pendant dix ans (it is over). Depuis with an ongoing past state takes the imparfait: Il habitait là depuis deux ans quand…

The Russian aspect trap. The Russian imperfective past is not the imparfait. A general fact — я читал эту книгу ("I have read this book") — is j'ai lu ce livre: a completed experience, not a background.

Evaluating an event takes the passé composé: Le concert ? Ça a été génial — c'était génial describes the atmosphere.

The imparfait of politeness: Je voulais vous demander un service.

WrittenCorrectWhy
J'habitais à Lyon pendant dix ans.J'ai habité à Lyon pendant dix ans.a bounded duration → passé composé
Je lisais ce livre. (I have read it)J'ai lu ce livre.a completed experience → passé composé
Il était malade toute la semaine. (over now)Il a été malade toute la semaine.a closed period → passé composé

In Russian the choice is aspect, and it maps well: the imperfective (читал) is the imparfait's background or habit, the perfective (прочитал) the passé composé's completed event. The trap is duration: я два часа читал is imperfective in Russian but j'ai lu pendant deux heures in French — a bounded duration takes the passé composé.
