Le passé simple : le reconnaître dans les livres
P50.verb-systems.25 · Audience: guest, language-pro, it-ml
Unité GR-62 · campagne 26 · il parla, il finit, il fut, ils vinrent — lire sans buter.
Open a novel, a tale or a newspaper feature and the past is told in a tense you almost never hear: the passé simple. Nobody uses it in conversation, and at B2 you do not need to produce it. You need to recognise it at reading speed: which verb, which person, and that it means an event, where the spoken language would use the passé composé.
What it is for
The passé simple tells the events of a written narrative; the imparfait still paints the background around them — the same split as passé composé / imparfait (GR-50):
Il pleuvait depuis le matin. Soudain, la porte s'ouvrit et un homme entra.
In speech, the same story says la porte s'est ouverte, un homme est entré.
The three sets of endings
| -a type | -i type | -u type | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verbs | every -er verb | -ir verbs, most -re verbs (finir, prendre, dire, mettre, faire, voir) | -oir verbs and some others (être, avoir, pouvoir, vouloir, savoir, lire, boire, courir, connaître) |
| je | je parlai | je finis | je pus |
| tu | tu parlas | tu finis | tu pus |
| il, elle | il parla | il finit | il put |
| nous | nous parlâmes | nous finîmes | nous pûmes |
| vous | vous parlâtes | vous finîtes | vous pûtes |
| ils, elles | ils parlèrent | ils finirent | ils purent |
Venir and tenir have their own set: il vint, ils vinrent; il tint, ils tinrent.
In books you meet mostly the third person — il, elle, ils, elles — so those two rows are the ones to know by sight.
The forms you will meet most
| Infinitive | il / elle | ils / elles |
|---|---|---|
| être | fut | furent |
| avoir | eut | eurent |
| faire | fit | firent |
| dire | dit | dirent |
| prendre | prit | prirent |
| mettre | mit | mirent |
| voir | vit | virent |
| pouvoir | put | purent |
| savoir | sut | surent |
| vouloir | voulut | voulurent |
| venir | vint | vinrent |
| naître, mourir | naquit, mourut | naquirent, moururent |
The traps when reading
- Il finit, il dit, il rit are both présent and passé simple — the surrounding tenses decide. In a narrative in the imparfait, il dit means he said.
- Il parla (passé simple) and il parlera (futur) differ by one syllable; ils parlèrent and ils parleront by the ending — -èrent is the past.
- Il fut is être, not falloir (il fallut); il vit is voir (he saw), and also vivre (he lives) in the présent.
- Je fis (passé simple of faire) is not je fais.
If you want to use it
You do not need to. But in a formal written story at the DELF, a coherent passé simple with the imparfait reads well — provided every event verb is in it. Mixing it with the passé composé inside one narrative is the one thing to avoid.
The errors to watch
| Written | Correct | Why |
|---|---|---|
| (in an email) Hier, il parla à sa mère. | Hier, il a parlé à sa mère. | the passé simple belongs to written narrative; everyday writing uses the passé composé |
| Il entra et il a ouvert la fenêtre. | Il entra et ouvrit la fenêtre. | one narrative, one past: never mix the passé simple and the passé composé |
| ils parlairent | ils parlèrent | every -er verb takes -èrent |
| il venit | il vint | venir and tenir have their own set: vint, tint |
If your first language is Russian
Russian has one past with two aspects. French narrative in books has two pasts: the passé simple for the completed event — close to the Russian perfective он вошёл — and the imparfait for the ongoing background — close to шёл дождь.
Minimal pairs. One change between the two sentences, and what it does:
| Sentence | Its pair | What the one change does |
|---|---|---|
| Il parla. | Il parlera. | passé simple against futur: one syllable |
| Chaque jour, il finit à six heures. | Ce jour-là, il finit à six heures. | the same form: présent in a habit, passé simple in a narrative |
| Il vit la mer. | Il vit à Nice. | voir in the passé simple against vivre in the présent |
| Il fut surpris. | Il fallut partir. | être against falloir |
