Avec ou sans complément : « je suis obligé » ou « j'ai obligé Dupont à venir »

Unité GR-63 · campagne 6 · je suis obligé de partir, j'ai obligé Dupont à venir.
Many French verbs are used mostly without an object — as a state, an adjective — and sometimes
with one, as an action done to someone. The two uses look alike, because both are a form of
être or avoir plus a past participle. They mean different things, take different prepositions,
and learners confuse them constantly: j'ai obligé de partir, je suis obligé à partir.
Être + participle: a state. Avoir + participle: an action
| A state (être + participle, used as an adjective) | An action on someone or something (avoir + participle + object) |
|---|---|
| Je suis obligé de partir. (I have to) | J'ai obligé Dupont à venir. (I forced him) |
| Elle est fatiguée. | Ce voyage l'a fatiguée. |
| La porte est fermée. | J'ai fermé la porte. |
| Nous sommes décidés à partir. | Nous avons décidé de partir. |
| Il est forcé de vendre. | La banque l'a forcé à vendre. |
| Je suis surpris. | Ta réponse m'a surpris. |
The left column is not the passé composé of an être verb (obliger takes avoir), and it is not an event: it describes how the subject is. The participle agrees with the subject like any adjective: elle est obligée, ils sont fatigués.
The preposition changes with the construction
The same verb takes one preposition for the person who is made to act and another for the state:
| Action on someone | State of the subject |
|---|---|
| obliger quelqu'un à + infinitive | être obligé de + infinitive |
| forcer quelqu'un à | être forcé de |
| décider quelqu'un à (to persuade) | être décidé à, se décider à; décider de (to decide) |
| autoriser quelqu'un à | être autorisé à |
| encourager quelqu'un à | être encouragé à |
Related verbs that learners mix up: demander à quelqu'un de faire; aider quelqu'un à faire; empêcher quelqu'un de faire; permettre à quelqu'un de faire.
The same verb with or without an object
Some verbs work both ways with no change of form — the object is simply there or not — and the auxiliary can follow:
- La réunion a commencé à neuf heures. / Le directeur a commencé la réunion.
- Les prix ont augmenté. / Le magasin a augmenté les prix.
- Le spectacle a fini tard. / J'ai fini mon travail.
- With the six verbs of movement, the auxiliary changes: Il est sorti. / Il a sorti le chien. (see Être ou avoir au passé composé).
The pronominal form as the object-less use
French often makes an action object-less by making it pronominal: J'ouvre la porte / La porte s'ouvre; On vend ce livre partout / Ce livre se vend partout; Il a arrêté la voiture / La voiture s'est arrêtée.
The errors to watch
| Written | Correct | Why |
|---|---|---|
| J'ai obligé de partir. | Je suis obligé de partir. | no object → a state, with être |
| Je suis obligé à partir. | Je suis obligé de partir. | the state takes de |
| J'ai obligé Dupont de venir. | J'ai obligé Dupont à venir. | acting on someone takes à |
| Elle est obligé de rester. | Elle est obligée de rester. | the participle agrees like an adjective |
| La porte a ouvert. | La porte s'est ouverte. | without an object, ouvrir becomes pronominal |
If your first language is Russian
Russian separates the two with two different words — я вынужден уйти (a state) and я заставил его прийти (an action) — so the confusion comes from French using one verb for both. Map вынужден onto être obligé de, and заставить кого onto obliger quelqu'un à.
Minimal pairs. One change between the two sentences, and what it does:
| Sentence | Its pair | What the one change does |
|---|---|---|
| Je suis obligé de partir. | J'ai obligé Dupont à partir. | a state with de against an action on someone with à |
| La porte est fermée. | J'ai fermé la porte. | a state against the action that caused it |
| Les prix ont augmenté. | Le magasin a augmenté les prix. | the same verb without and with an object |
| La porte s'ouvre. | J'ouvre la porte. | without an object, ouvrir becomes pronominal |
