Paradoxes et nuances : le piège du presque-vrai

Unité CE-11 · campagne 9 · vrai, faux… ou vrai autrement.

The highest-scoring CE questions live where a text says two things that seem to clash — and both are true. Distractors then offer the crude versions: one half of the paradox, or a "resolution" the author never proposed. Your defence is to name the mechanism that reconciles the two halves.

Three paradox anatomy lessons:

  1. The success that produces failure. Le festival affiche complet, et pourtant il perd de l'argent. Mechanism: every ticket is sold à perte, so more public = more loss. Once you hold the mechanism, the trick questions (why does success deepen the deficit?) answer themselves.
  2. The improvement that expels its beneficiaries. Plus un quartier s'embellit, moins ses habitants historiques peuvent y vivre. Mechanism: les loyers suivent les façades. A plus… moins… frame is French's compact paradox syntax — treat it as a machine with a hidden gear, and find the gear.
  3. The declared vs the done. Jamais autant déclaré aimer la lecture ; jamais acheté si peu de livres. No contradiction: declarations and behaviour are different measurements (l'attachement proclamé vs la pratique réelle). Surveys measure the first; sales, the second.

And the nuance marker to respect everywhere: ne… pas pour autantvendre moins n'est pas pour autant perdre de l'argent. It cancels an inference, not a fact. The items below hand you four almost-contradictions; in each, locate the gear that makes both halves true.
