Sound drill: the nasals /ɑ̃/ and /ɔ̃/ (an, on)

P45.pronunciation-drills.04 · Audience: guest, language-pro, it-ml · Prerequisites: Sound drill: closed é versus open è

Unité PO-06 · campagne 4 · blanc et blond.

Blanc and blond differ only in their nasal vowel, so if the two merge — or if an n creeps in after them — the listener loses the word. The an of blanc is the open nasal /ɑ̃/; the on of blond is the rounded one /ɔ̃/. In both, the vowel itself carries the nasality: do not sound the n. Record the models and listen for a leaked consonant.

Say: Un bon vin blanc.

Say: Les enfants regardent un long film.
