Les plans de texte : concession puis renversement

The single most common plan in French press argumentation is a two-step figure: concession → renversement. The author first grants the opposing point — generously, even — then pivots and builds the real position on top of it.

Step 1, la concession. Recognisable openers: Que… , nul ne le conteste, Reconnaissons-le, Bien sûr, on veut bien l'admettre. Everything inside this zone is borrowed opinion. It is well-written, factually solid — and it is not the thesis. This is exactly why exams harvest distractors here.

Step 2, le renversement. A pivot marker flips the text: mais, pour autant, il serait pourtant myope de…, encore faudrait-il…. From this word on, the author speaks in their own name; the thesis is downstream of the pivot, often in the final sentence (ce qui était un gouffre est devenu un investissement).

Reading protocol for any argumentative passage: first locate the pivot, then split the text into before (conceded) and after (asserted). Structure questions — comment ce texte est-il construit ? — are answered by naming the two steps; position questions are answered only from the after-zone.
