Repérer la thèse : l'essentiel est ailleurs

A B2 argumentative text almost never opens with its thèse. It opens with the received opinion — what on thinks, what the debate looks like from outside — and then displaces it. Reading for the thesis means finding the displacement.

Three recurring machines:

1. La question n'est pas X, mais Y. The thesis lives in Y, always. Le problème n'est pas la quantité de fautes, c'est l'absence d'un apprentissage adapté. X is the decoy the exam will offer you as a distractor.
2. The false closure. Chacun y a vu la fin du débat. C'est aller vite en besogne… — the author reports a conclusion precisely to reopen it. The thesis is what survives the reopening.
3. The displacement of terrain. Both camps argue chiffres et ambiance; the author announces they are all missing the point (jamais pouvoir. Or c'est bien de cela qu'il s'agit). The thesis is the new terrain, usually compressed into the final sentence: le télétravail n'est pas un confort, c'est une renégociation.

Practical reflex: underline the sentence that contradicts or reframes the opening — not the opening itself. Distractors are literally true sentences from the wrong half of the machine.
