The formal email is the single genre you will actually write for the rest of your French-using life, so it earns its own maintenance drill. The skill being kept sharp here is register control — the ability to slide from the familier you use with friends up to the soutenu a professional message demands, on purpose and without leakage.
An email has a fixed skeleton, and each slot has a register:

Three failure modes recur. First, register leakage: « Salut, j'ai un souci, répondez vite » drops into a formal frame and reads as rude. Second, over-hedging: « si vous pouviez peut-être éventuellement… quand vous aurez le temps si ça ne dérange pas » buries the request under so much padding that politeness turns to fog — the soutenu is precise, not timid. Third, the tu / vous trap: the moment a message becomes official or carries a hierarchical recipient in copy, you switch to vous, even for a colleague you tutoyer in the corridor. Context, not intimacy, sets the pronoun.
Russian speakers have the ты / вы distinction already, which helps; English speakers must build the whole politeness layer from scratch, since "please" does most of the work in one word.
The practice rewrites a familiar opening, closes an email properly, spots over-hedging, and resolves a tu / vous dilemma.
