La relecture, passe 2 : la chasse aux accords
P47.orthography-and-agreement.04 · Audience: guest, language-pro, it-ml · Prerequisites: La relecture, passe 1 : la chasse aux accents
Unité PE-11 · campagne 2 · une passe, une cible : les accords.
Second sweep of the three-pass method: accents are done, and this pass reads your copy checking agreements only — gender, number, subject-verb. The working rule: start from the noun and walk its chain — determiner, adjectives, participles — making every link match. In « Les mesures proposé par la mairie ont été adopté », the noun is mesures (feminine plural), so the chain demands proposées and adoptées.
Three traps recur in B2 copies, so pass 2 carries three checks:
- The collective subject. « Une équipe de chercheurs ont publié… » — the subject is une équipe, singular, whatever the plural sitting next to it says. Correct: a publié.
- The COD before the verb. With avoir, the participle agrees only when the direct object precedes it: « les factures qu'il avait imprimées » — que (the invoices) came first, so the participle agrees.
- The pronominal pair. « Elle s'est lavée » agrees (the object s' precedes); « Elle s'est lavé les mains » does not (the object les mains follows).
One family, three checks, nothing else — verb endings wait for pass 3. The practice items hand you flawed sentences and ask exactly what this pass catches.
