Les connecteurs d'opposition : alors que, tandis que, en revanche, contrairement à

P47.b2-writing.30 · Audience: guest, language-pro, it-ml

Unité GR-34 · campagne 18 · deux faits face à face : l'art du contraste.

Opposition differs from concession (GR-32): concession admits a fact and resists its conclusion; opposition simply sets two facts side by side and lets the contrast speak. B2 essays live on this move — comparing two policies, two eras, two halves of a country.

contrairement ànoun / pronounneutralContrairement aux prévisions, il n'a pas plu.

Alors que is double-natured, and context decides. Temporal: alors que je rangeais la cuisine, le téléphone a sonné — pure "while", no contrast. Oppositional: il sort sans manteau alors qu'il gèle — the "while" has hardened into "whereas", often with a hint of reproach. Russian mirrors the ambiguity loosely (в то время как can do both), so the concept transfers; what must not transfer is mood — alors que takes the indicative, never the subjunctive, because both opposed facts are real. That is exactly what separates it from bien que.

Tandis que is its near-twin, a notch more literary and slightly more at home in balanced, symmetrical contrasts. En revanche is the essay adverb — it opens the second panel of a diptych, typically after a semicolon; par contre says the same thing one register down, fine in speech, risky in a DELF essay. Contrairement à attaches only to a noun or pronoun: contrairement à son frère, never contrairement à il pense (the fix: contrairement à ce qu'il pense).

The practice closes the connector series by making you pick along both axes: clause vs noun, neutral vs soutenu.
