Exam anatomy: the monologue suivi + débat format

Before a single word is spoken aloud, know the épreuve you are training for. The DELF B2 Production orale runs in two halves, after a preparation window:

• 30 minutes of preparation. You draw two subjects, keep one, and build your notes — a plan, keywords only. Pick the subject where you have arguments and examples, not the one you find most interesting.
• ~10 minutes: le monologue suivi. You present and defend a viewpoint on the subject — position, arguments with examples, a concession or an anticipated objection, a widened conclusion. Your notes are a map; reading a written text aloud breaks the register and costs points.
• ~10 minutes: le débat. The examiner attacks your argument line. They are not trying to win — they are measuring whether you can defend, concede and refute while your French stays intact.

The barème rewards task completion, coherence, range, accuracy and register — the same five bands the speech rungs of this pillar score. No recording in this unit: check your knowledge of the format below, then the next unit builds the written skeleton.
