Les automatismes de l'oral I : la chaîne parlée et ses élisions
P50.verb-systems.16 · Audience: guest, language-pro, it-ml
Unité GR-46 · campagne 26 · quand on parle, l'ordre des petits mots ne se calcule pas — il se déclenche.
The written side of these elisions — which words lose their vowel, and the h-aspiré verbs that refuse — is on Je → j' : l'élision autour du verbe.
In writing you have time to assemble ne + pronoun + auxiliary + pas. In speech you don't: the chain must fire as one gesture. This unit drills that gesture by ear — you hear an exchange, you pick the reply that sounds right, and only then do you see it written.
The chain, as one block
ne comes first, before every pronoun; pas locks in right after the auxiliary: elle ne s'est pas retournée · nous n'avons pas osé. Nothing ever slips between the pronoun cluster and the auxiliary.
The elisions are not optional
Before a vowel, ne, le, la, me, te, se, je lose their vowel — always: on l'a félicité, il n'ose plus, tu t'es levé, elle s'est assise, j'en garde un. Saying the full vowel (« je ne ai », « tu te es ») is what an accent sounds like from the inside; the drill makes the elided form the automatic one.
Listen first. The transcript appears after you answer — read it then, to tie the sound you chose to its spelling.
Going further
Minimal pairs. One change between the two sentences, and what it does:
| Sentence | Its pair | What the one change does |
|---|---|---|
| Je n'ai pas vu. | Je n'ai rien vu. | the second negation word sits in the same slot |
| Je ne le vois pas. | Je ne l'ai pas vu. | the object pronoun stays inside the frame, before the auxiliary |
| Je ne vais pas le faire. | J'ai décidé de ne pas le faire. | a conjugated verb is framed; an infinitive has ne pas in front |
| Tu ne t'es pas levé. | Tu ne te lèves pas. | te elides before a vowel |
The rest of the negation frame: before an infinitive, ne pas comes together — de ne pas le dire; personne and nulle part go after the participle — je n'ai vu personne. The full system is on la négation.
Where elision stops: lui and leur never elide (je lui ai dit); a stressed le after an affirmative imperative stays full (fais-le entrer); si elides only before il.
In speech ne drops — j'sais pas, il vient jamais — recognise it; keep ne when you write.
| Written | Correct | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Je n'ai personne vu. | Je n'ai vu personne. | personne after the participle |
| Je l'ui ai dit. | Je lui ai dit. | lui never elides |
| de ne le pas dire | de ne pas le dire | ne pas before the pronoun and the infinitive |
The other negations use the same frame: *je ne l'ai plus vu, je ne l'ai jamais vu, je **n'*ai rien vu. Where the pronoun sits inside the frame is on Où va le pronom ?.
In Russian не sits directly before the verb and nothing follows it. French adds the second word after the auxiliary — the reflex to build is ne + pronoun + auxiliary + pas.
