Official announcements follow a two-beat rhythm: a general rule, then the clause that punches a hole in it. The rule is loud; the hole is where the exam question lives.

Learn the restriction family as one sound-set, from everyday to formal: sauf → excepté → hormis → à l'exclusion de → exception faite de. All five perform the same operation — remove this group from the rule — but the formal ones (hormis, à l'exclusion de) hide in fast administrative prose where a tired ear parses them as filler.

Two reflexes to build:

1. Re-scope immediately. Le tarif réduit s'applique à tous les moins de 26 ans, à l'exclusion des étudiants hors UE — the true beneficiary set is "under-26 minus non-EU students". Say the reduced set to yourself before the next sentence starts.
2. Watch for the counter-exception. Sauf accompagnateurs… sur présentation d'un justificatif — an exception can carry its own condition. The item will ask for precisely that condition, not the headline rule.
