Second authentic-text station: the science pages. French vulgarisation — science rewritten for the general reader — has its own grammar of caution, and B2 items test whether you can hear how loudly a claim is actually being made.

The calibration scale, from weakest to strongest: suggère → indique → montre → démontre. Une étude suggère qu'une marche quotidienne améliorerait la mémoire makes two hedges at once — the verb, and the conditional. Neither is decoration; both are the finding's real size.

Three reading reflexes:

1. Check the sample. Quarante-deux volontaires is a pilot, not a proof — and good articles say so themselves (les auteurs appellent à la prudence).
2. Corrélation n'est pas cause. The classic scandal: a modest correlation in the lab becomes le chocolat protège le cœur in the headline. When an item asks what the author criticises, it is usually this transformation — plus the funding detail slipped in au demeurant.
3. Enjoy the images, keep the numbers. Frôler la braise makes six million kilometres feel close; the image explains scale, it does not replace it.
