La négation : les formes, leur place, et ne … que

Unité GR-59 · campagne 5 · je n'ai rien vu, je n'ai vu personne, je n'ai que dix euros.
French negation is a frame of two words around the verb: ne before it, a second word after it. The second word carries the meaning — pas, plus, jamais, rien, personne… — and it also decides where it goes once a compound tense or an infinitive is involved. That is the part learners get wrong: je n'ai vu rien, je n'ai personne vu.
The forms
| Negation | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ne … pas | not | Je ne travaille pas le lundi. |
| ne … plus | no longer, no more | Il ne fume plus. |
| ne … jamais | never | Elle ne ment jamais. |
| ne … rien | nothing | Je ne comprends rien. |
| ne … personne | nobody | Je ne connais personne ici. |
| ne … aucun(e) + noun | not a single, no | Il n'a aucune idée. |
| ne … nulle part | nowhere | Je ne le trouve nulle part. |
| ne … guère | hardly (written, formal) | Il ne sort guère. |
| ne … ni … ni | neither … nor | Je ne bois ni thé ni café. |
Where the second word goes
In a simple tense, the frame wraps the conjugated verb (and its pronouns): Je ne le vois pas.
In a compound tense, the words split into two groups:
- pas, plus, jamais, rien, guère go before the participle, right after the auxiliary: Je n'ai rien vu. Il n'est jamais venu. Nous n'avons plus parlé.
- personne, aucun, nulle part go after the participle: Je n'ai vu personne. Il n'a fait aucune erreur. Je ne l'ai trouvé nulle part.
The reason: rien, pas, jamais behave like adverbs of the verb, personne and aucun like its object — and an object follows the participle.
Before an infinitive, ne and the short words come together, in front: Il m'a demandé de ne pas fumer. J'ai décidé de ne plus y aller. Essaie de ne rien oublier. But personne still follows: J'ai préféré ne voir personne.
Personne and rien as the subject
When the negation is the subject, it comes first and ne still stays before the verb — with no
pas: *Personne ne m'a appelé. **Rien n'**a changé. Aucun élève **n'*est venu. Adding
pas here is the classic error (personne n'est pas venu).
Ne … que: a restriction, not a negation
Ne … que means only. The sentence is affirmative in meaning: *Je **n'*ai que dix euros =
I have only ten euros. Que goes right before the word it restricts: *Il ne travaille que
le matin. Je **n'**en ai pris **qu'*un. Because it is not a negation, the article does not reduce
to de: je n'ai que des pommes (not que de pommes).
The article under negation
A negated un, une, des, du, de la becomes de / d' (GR-01): Je n'ai pas de voiture. With en, the number goes: Tu as une voiture ? — Non, je n'en ai pas (see Quel pronom ?, P49.pronoun-systems.09). With être, the article stays: Ce n'est pas une voiture (GR-02).
Answering a negative question: si
To contradict a negative question, French says si, not oui: Tu n'as pas faim ? — Si, j'ai très faim. Non agrees with the negation: — Non, je n'ai pas faim.
What you will hear
In speech ne is very often dropped: J'sais pas. Il vient jamais. Y a personne. It is normal spoken French — recognise it; in writing, and at the DELF, keep ne.
The errors to watch
| Written | Correct | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Je n'ai vu rien. | Je n'ai rien vu. | rien goes before the participle |
| Je n'ai personne vu. | Je n'ai vu personne. | personne goes after the participle |
| Personne n'est pas venu. | Personne n'est venu. | no pas with a negative subject |
| Je ne veux pas rien. | Je ne veux rien. | pas never joins rien, personne, jamais — only plus and jamais combine: je ne vois plus personne, il ne dit jamais rien |
| Il m'a dit de ne fumer pas. | Il m'a dit de ne pas fumer. | ne pas together before an infinitive |
| Tu ne viens pas ? — Oui, je viens. | — Si, je viens. | si contradicts a negative question |
If your first language is Russian
Russian stacks negations — я ничего не видел, никто не пришёл — and French does not add pas to them: je n'ai rien vu, ***personne n'*est venu. Where Russian has не plus a negative word, French has ne plus that word alone. French can still chain plus or jamais with rien or personne — je ne vois plus personne — but never pas.
Minimal pairs. One change between the two sentences, and what it does:
| Sentence | Its pair | What the one change does |
|---|---|---|
| Je n'ai rien vu. | Je n'ai vu personne. | rien before the participle, personne after it |
| Je n'ai pas de pommes. | Je n'ai que des pommes. | a negation reduces the article; ne … que does not |
| Tu viens ? — Oui. | Tu ne viens pas ? — Si. | si answers yes to a negative question |
| Personne n'est venu. | Je n'ai vu personne. | as the subject, personne comes first, without pas |
