Révision des pièges d'examen II : dix pièges de plus

P47.orthography-and-agreement.08 · Audience: guest, language-pro, it-ml

Unité GR-38 · campagne 19 · la seconde tournée — dont plusieurs pièges que même les natifs ratent.

Second and final trap review before the exam. This tier is subtler: several of these are hypercorrections — errors made while trying to sound learned — which makes spotting them in your own prose all the more satisfying. Ten traps, ten tests:

PiègeTest de deux secondes
vingt / cent au pluriel-s when multiplied and final: quatre-vingts euros, deux cents euros; no -s when another numeral follows: quatre-vingt-trois, deux cent dix
demi / mi-invariable + hyphen before the noun: une demi-heure, à mi-chemin; gender-only agreement after it: deux heures et demie
tel quefollowed by que, agrees with what precedes: des nuisances telles que le bruit; alone, with what follows: tel un mur
second / deuxièmecareful usage keeps second for a series of two: la Seconde Guerre mondiale
palliertransitive direct: pallier le manque — «pallier à» is the classic hypercorrection
malgré quebanned in formal writing: malgré + noun, or bien que + subjonctif
soi-disantinvariable, and properly of persons claiming something of themselves: ces soi-disant experts
se rappeler / se souvenirse rappeler quelque chose (direct), se souvenir de quelque chose
y comprisinvariable before the noun: y compris les taxes
ci-jointinvariable at the head of the sentence or before the noun: ci-joint la facture; agrees after it: la facture ci-jointe

The letter-writing yield is again deliberate: ci-joint la facture, y compris les frais de port, quatre-vingts euros — every réclamation you have written this course walked past three of these traps. The practice drills the numeral rule, demi, tel que and pallier; the rest ride along in the table and the vocabulary. Fold both trap tables into your final relecture routine: they are the last two passes your copy takes before the jour J.
