Dashboards That Earn Their Tiles

A dashboard starts as a good idea and ends, too often, as wallpaper. The first version has three numbers that matter and everyone watches it. A year later it has forty tiles, half of them nobody can explain, a row of red alerts everyone has learned to ignore, and a chart that has been broken since a data migration in March that no one noticed because no one looks. Nothing was done wrong on any single day; the dashboard decayed one well-meaning addition at a time. This module is about the discipline that keeps a dashboard alive: making every tile earn its place, refusing the alerts that train people to look away, and pruning as deliberately as you add.

Step 1 / 4A tile is a promise that someone will act

The "so what" test from the last module applies to every tile on a dashboard, and it is brutal when applied honestly. A tile is not there to show that you can measure something; it is there because someone, when the number moves, will do something differently. If no decision hangs on a number, the number is not a tile — it is decoration that dilutes the tiles that matter by making the whole surface harder to scan.

Why it matters — Dashboards bloat because adding a tile feels free and free things accumulate. But every tile has a hidden cost: it competes for the same scarce attention as the tiles that carry real decisions, so a surface with forty numbers is worse at surfacing the three that matter than a surface with only those three. The test for admitting a tile is not 'is this true and available?' — almost everything is — but 'when this moves, who changes what they do?' A tile with no such owner and no such action is a tile that trains people to skim past the whole board, because most of what they see is inert. Earning a tile means naming the decision it serves before it goes up, and taking it down when that decision no longer exists.
