The second wave of triggers is subtler, because it runs along the line between asserting a fact and suspending it. French grammar encodes that line in the mode of the que-clause.

TriggerModeExample
j'espère que — even for wishesindicativeJ'espère que tu es bien arrivé.

The logic of the first three rows: an affirmative opinion asserts the content, so the indicative follows; negating the opinion withdraws the assertion, and the clause slides into the subjunctive. Espérer is the famous exception — semantically a wish, grammatically an assertion: j'espère que tu vas bien, never que tu ailles. Russian offers no protection here, since я не думаю, что он прав keeps a plain indicative; the mode shift after negation must be learned as French-internal mechanics.

Bien que and pour que are simpler: they are unconditional triggers, like il faut que from GR-25. Concession admits the fact yet refuses its consequence (bien qu'il soit tard…), and purpose describes a result that does not exist yet (pour qu'on t'entende) — both live outside assertion, so both take the subjunctive every single time.

At B2, examiners listen specifically for bien que + subjonctif and for the indicative after espérer — one earns credit, the other avoids a flagged error. The practice mixes all five rows so the assertion test becomes fast.

Going further

Minimal pairs. One change between the two sentences, and what it does:

SentenceIts pairWhat the one change does
Je pense qu'il a raison.Je ne pense pas qu'il ait raison.belief is indicative; negated, it becomes doubt: subjonctif
J'espère qu'il viendra.Je souhaite qu'il vienne.espérer takes the indicatif; souhaiter the subjonctif
Tu crois qu'il viendra ?Crois-tu qu'il vienne ?the inverted question allows the subjonctif of doubt

The certainty scale decides the mood:

Indicative (certain, probable)Subjonctif (possible, doubtful, emotional)

Emotion triggers the subjonctif: Je suis content que tu sois là. Je regrette qu'il parte. J'ai peur qu'il pleuve.

An inverted question makes it optional: Pensez-vous qu'il ait raison ? / qu'il a raison ?

WrittenCorrectWhy

In English the difference is carried by the verb itself (I think / I doubt); French adds the mood of the following verb, so both have to agree.
