Du présent aux autres temps : les radicaux passerelles
P50.verb-systems.15 · Audience: guest, language-pro, it-ml
Unité GR-45 · campagne 26 · le présent n'est pas un temps parmi d'autres : c'est la carrière d'où les autres temps extraient leurs radicaux.
If the present feels like a detour on your way to the subjunctive or the imparfait, reverse the picture: those tenses are made of present stems. Two bridges carry almost everything.
Bridge 1 — the ils-form gives the subjunctive
Take the present ils-form, remove -ent, add the subjunctive endings:
ils prenn(ent) → que je prenne · ils finiss(ent) → que tu finisses · ils boiv(ent) → qu'elle boive · ils écriv(ent) → qu'ils écrivent
The short list that refuses the bridge — sois, aie, fasse, aille, sache, puisse, veuille — is the same outlaw club you already memorized.
Bridge 2 — the nous-form gives the imparfait… and more
Take the present nous-form, remove -ons : that stem carries the whole imparfait, for every person:
nous finiss(ons) → je finissais, tu finissais, elles finissaient · nous buv(ons) → il buvait · nous écriv(ons) → vous écriviez
One exception in the entire language: être → j'étais.
The same nous-stem also serves the subjonctif of nous and vous : nous buvions, vous buviez — which is why boire alternates inside its own subjunctive: que je boive (ils-stem) but que nous buvions (nous-stem).
Why this matters for review
When a present-tense card comes back in your review deck, you are not maintaining one tense — you are maintaining the raw material of three. The ils and nous forms are the two most valuable facts about any French verb.
Going further
Minimal pairs. One change between the two sentences, and what it does:
| Sentence | Its pair | What the one change does |
|---|---|---|
| Que je boive. | Que nous buvions. | subjonctif: the ils stem for je, the nous stem for nous |
| Que je prenne. | Que nous prenions. | the same two stems for prendre |
| Je buvais. | Que je boive. | the imparfait takes the nous stem, the subjonctif the ils stem |
| Que je vienne. | Que vous veniez. | and the same for venir |
Two stems inside the subjonctif — je / tu / il / ils from the ils stem, nous / vous from the nous stem: que je vienne / que nous venions, que je voie / que nous voyions, que je reçoive / que nous recevions.
Fully irregular nous / vous: soyons, ayons, sachions, puissions, fassions.
Double i when the stem ends in i or y: nous étudiions, que nous voyions, que vous croyiez — see les verbes qui changent pour se prononcer.
Spelling in the imparfait: je mangeais, je commençais (the e and the ç keep the soft sound before a).
| Written | Correct | Why |
|---|---|---|
| que nous viennions | que nous venions | nous / vous take the nous stem |
| nous étudions (imparfait) | nous étudiions | stem étudi- + -ions |
| je mangais | je mangeais | ge before a |
In Russian you learn a verb by two stems (писать: пишу, пишет). French also runs on stems: the nous stem feeds the imparfait and the nous / vous subjonctif, the ils stem feeds the rest of the subjonctif.
