B2 argumentation is a duel: pick a side, defend it, dismiss the objection. C1 argumentation is a balancing act. The prized quality here is nuance — the capacity to grant each camp its measure of truth without dissolving into indecision. A blunt claim like « les réseaux sociaux sont un désastre absolu, il faut les interdire » now reads as a weakness: it convinces no one because it sees only half the picture.
The engine of nuanced writing is the concessive chain. Where PE-23 taught a single concede-then-refute move, C1 links several in sequence, each concession picked up and pushed past:
| Beat | Marker |
|---|---|
| Concede the objection | Certes, les réseaux exposent à la désinformation… |
| Concede a counter-benefit | …néanmoins, ils donnent une voix aux exclus… |
| Re-establish the thesis | …il n'en demeure pas moins qu'une régulation s'impose. |
The danger to avoid is mistaking nuance for mush. Nuance is not « c'est peut- être bien, ou peut-être pas, je ne sais pas trop » — that is abdication. A nuanced thesis stays firm while acknowledging its own limits: « Cette mesure est utile dans son principe, même si son application demande des garde-fous. » You hold the line and admit the caveat in the same breath.
The paradoxical payoff, worth internalising: granting the opponent legitimacy strengthens you. A reader trusts a writer who has clearly weighed the strongest counter-argument and still holds their ground, far more than one who pretended the other side had nothing to say.
The practice flags an over-blunt claim, identifies a concessive chain, models a firm-yet-nuanced thesis, and shows how conceding the opponent's force reinforces your own.
