Le registre : nous ou on, et la chasse aux anglicismes

P47.b2-writing.13 · Audience: guest, language-pro, it-ml

Unité PE-15 · campagne 6 · une copie formelle parle « nous » et parle français.

Register errors are the most avoidable losses on a B2 copy: the grammar is right, the argument is right, and the sentence still reads like a text message. Two sweeps fix most of it.

Sweep one: on → nous. When on stands for the author — « on a bien reçu votre courrier » — formal writing demands nous: « Nous avons bien reçu votre courrier et nous vous répondrons au plus vite ». But do not over-correct: the impersonal on, meaning people-in-general, is perfectly acceptable in an essay — « On constate depuis dix ans une hausse régulière des loyers ». The hunt targets only the on that hides a nous: the author's voice, the company's voice, the letter-writer's voice.

Sweep two: anglicisms. Every English loan that has a living French equivalent costs lexical credit: feedbackle retour, managerle responsable, businessl'activité, forwardertransmettre, deadlinele délai or l'échéance. « Ce retour est très positif pour notre activité, il faut le transmettre au responsable » says everything the anglicized version said, and scores where the other bleeds.

Beyond the two sweeps, hold the general line of the registre courant- soutenu: no franchement, no c'est trop bien, no ça as a subject in a thesis sentence, no exclamation-mark enthusiasm in a formal letter. A stance opening like « Nous soutiendrons que le télétravail, encadré par des règles claires, profite aux salariés comme aux employeurs » shows the target altitude.

The practice items are recognition and repair: pick the register-appropriate sentence among four, de-anglicize a business sentence without changing its meaning, and decide which on must become nous — and which must not.
