Les automatismes de l'oral III : le bon pronom, vite

P50.verb-systems.18 · Audience: guest, language-pro, it-ml

Unité GR-48 · campagne 26 · le pronom se choisit dans la demi-seconde — ou pas du tout.

The written rule behind these reflexes — where the pronoun goes in each frame — is on Où va le pronom ? Une seule règle, cinq cadres.

Le genre du pronom vient du nom, jamais du hasard

le vélo → je le prends ; la clé → je la prends ; les gants → je les prends. In fast speech the wrong gender slips out easily; the drills pair each noun with its pronoun until the match is instant.

En n'est pas décoratif

When the thing is a quantity or a du/de la/des object, the reply needs en : Du sucre ? — J'en prends un morceau. Dropping it (« je prends un morceau » is fine ; « je veux » alone is not) is the error this pool targets from every angle.

Entendre le temps dans une voyelle

je l'ai terminé (passé composé) and je la terminais (imparfait) differ by almost nothing — a closed é against an open ais, and the tiny [lɛ] of l'ai. The last drills train exactly that parse: hear the sentence, name the tense, then check the spelling that encodes it.

Going further

Minimal pairs. One change between the two sentences, and what it does:

SentenceIts pairWhat the one change does
La lettre ? Je la lis.Le livre ? Je le lis.the pronoun takes the gender of the noun it replaces
Le pain ? Je le prends.Du pain ? J'en prends.a definite object becomes le; an indefinite one en
Des pommes ? J'en ai trois.Les pommes ? Je les ai.en keeps the number; les takes the whole set
Je l'ai lue.Je l'ai lu.the participle agrees with the pronoun before avoir: la lettre against le livre

En keeps the number; a definite noun takes le: Des gants ? J'en ai deux, but Les gants ? Je les ai. The choice is set out on Quel pronom ?.

Lui or le: the verb's construction decides — je lui téléphone (téléphoner à) but *je **l'*aide (aider quelqu'un), whatever Russian says (помогать ему). Sorted verb by verb on Personne ou chose.

Agreement you can hear: when l' stands for a feminine noun, the participle can agree — la tâche ? Je l'ai finie — and mise, prise, faite, écrite make it audible.

WrittenCorrectWhy
Je lui aide.Je l'aide.aider quelqu'un is direct
Des gants ? J'ai deux.J'en ai deux.en stands for the noun
La lettre ? Je l'ai écrit.Je l'ai écrite.a direct la before avoir agrees

Why the gender follows the noun. The pronoun replaces the whole noun group, so it takes what the noun carries: la lettre → la, le livre → le. It is a copy of the noun, not a description of the thing.
