A French learner does not need to memorise thousands of conjugations. Almost every verb belongs to a family that shares one model verb: learn the model — its stems, its participle, its futur — and every member follows. Meeting éteindre for the first time, you do not look it up; you recognise peindre and conjugate. This page is the map of the families. GR-44 (P50.verb-systems.14) explains the stems; GR-56 (P50.verb-systems.21) the -er verbs that change their spelling.

The auxiliary is avoir for almost every verb. The verbs of movement and change of state take être — aller, venir, arriver, partir, sortir, entrer, rester, tomber, naître, mourir, devenir, descendre, monter — and every pronominal verb does.
Recognising the family
Two clues, in this order:
- The infinitive's ending narrows it: -er is almost always parler; -dre is rendre, prendre or peindre; -uire is conduire; -cevoir is recevoir.
- The nous form decides among the -ir verbs: nous finissons → finir; nous partons → partir; nous ouvrons (-ir verb conjugated like -er) → ouvrir.
A compound verb always follows its base: découvrir like couvrir, obtenir like tenir, apprendre like prendre, permettre like mettre.

If your first language is Russian
Russian sorts verbs by aspect pairs and conjugation type (-ешь / -ишь); French sorts them by model. The method is the same one you already use in Russian: from a new verb, find the pattern you know. The difference is the clue — in French, look at the infinitive's ending and the nous form, not the stress.
Minimal pairs. One change between the two sentences, and what it does:
