Paraphrase et reformulation : échapper à la répétition

The étendue du lexique line of the B2 grid is scored largely on one visible symptom: repetition. A copy that writes ce problème three times in three sentences caps its own lexical mark, whatever else it does well.

Three tools break the loop.

Synonyms in rotation. Le problème → cette difficulté, ce phénomène, cette situation; la mesure → cette décision, ce dispositif, cette initiative. Repaired: « Ce problème est grave : cette difficulté touche tous les habitants et exige une solution rapide. » Keep the register — ce souci slides familiar, ce truc is disqualifying.

Nominal reprise. Pick the idea up with a demonstrative + synonym noun: « La mesure a été adoptée hier. Cette décision divise pourtant le conseil municipal. » The demonstrative signals continuity; the new noun proves range.

Reformulation connectors. Autrement dit and c'est-à-dire let you say a thing twice legally — once abstract, once concrete: « Le dispositif est financé par la commune, autrement dit, les habitants le paient par leurs impôts. »

One place where reformulation is not optional: the introduction. Opening your copy by recopying the consigne word for word is the corrector's first red flag — the exam explicitly expects you to restate the subject in your own words. « Certains pensent que la voiture doit être interdite en centre-ville » becomes « Faut-il fermer les centres-villes à la circulation automobile ? La question divise… ».

For a Russian-L1 writer the trap is symmetrical: Russian tolerates lexical repetition for cohesion more than formal French does. Train the reflex here: every time a key noun appears a second time, reach for a reprise. The practice drills exactly that repair.
