Symmetric encryption & modes
P52.symmetric-encryption.01 · Audience: guest, it-ml, language-pro · Prerequisites: Hashing: fingerprints of data
Symmetric encryption uses one shared key to both encrypt and decrypt. This module builds the intuition with a repeating-key XOR cipher, then shows the single most instructive failure in applied cryptography — ECB mode leaking the structure of the plaintext — and what an authenticated mode (AEAD) fixes.
You build the cipher, then the detector that reveals the ECB flaw, then reason about modes on the interview rung.
Ask the mentor about this module
Ask a question about this content. The mentor explains and grounds its answer in what you are studying; asking is recorded as a learning signal, not a grade.
Keeping your files on this device
Off by default. The mentor always gets your file; this only decides whether your own copy stays here. Copies live in this browser only - they do not follow you to another device, and clearing site data removes them.
