Le mot inconnu : inférer le sens par le contexte

P46.b2-reading.18 · Audience: guest, language-pro, it-ml

Unité CE-14 · campagne 12 · le texte contient son propre dictionnaire.

At B2 you will meet words you have never seen — fustiger, affable, saliculture — and the exam plans for it: the question que signifie X dans ce texte ? is not a vocabulary test but a detective test. Authors leave clues, and there are only four kinds.

  1. The explicit reformulation. La saliculture, c'est-à-dire la récolte du sel dans les marais… — the definition is handed over. Watch for c'est-à-dire, autrement dit, en d'autres termes, and the apposition between commas (la mansarde, cette petite chambre sous le toit).
  2. The contrast frame. Contrairement à son prédécesseur, connu pour ses colères…, le nouveau directeur est un homme affable. Whatever affable means, it is the opposite of anger — then the behaviour list (il reçoit, écoute, remercie) confirms: warm, approachable.
  3. The intensity check. La grêle a anéanti le verger : pas une pomme n'a survécu. The consequences calibrate the verb — total, not partial. Distractors love offering the mild cousin (abîmer) of a violent word.
  4. The author's own meta-comment. Le maire fustige — le mot n'est pas trop fort — l'abandon de la ligne. When a writer defends a word choice, the word is strong; take the hint.

Morphology is your Russian-honed bonus skill: sali-culture parses like сель-ское хозяйство parses — root plus activity. Guess from parts, then verify against the clue. The items below plant four unknowns; find each clue before the choices.
