The pronoun pillar opens on the distinction immersion almost never repairs: what replaces à + noun depends on whether that noun is a thing or a person.

Things and places → y, placed before the verb:

• Tu penses à ton projet ? — Oui, j'y pense.
• Vous tenez à cette photo ? — Oui, nous y tenons.
• Tu participes au débat ? — Oui, j'y participe.

People, with verbs like penser à, tenir à, songer à → keep à + tonic pronoun after the verb:

• Tu penses à ta sœur ? — Oui, je pense à elle. (not j'y pense)
• Il tient à sa grand-mère ? — Oui, il tient beaucoup à elle.

Why these verbs resist the clitic: their à-complement is not a recipient but something closer to a fixed preposition phrase, and French reserves the tonic forms — moi, toi, lui, elle, eux, elles — for people held inside a preposition.

One boundary to respect: most à + person verbs (téléphoner à, parler à, répondre à) take lui/leur before the verb instead — je lui téléphone, never je téléphone à elle. That system gets its own unit; here you only need the penser/tenir/songer family. The practice alternates thing and person until the fork is automatic.

Going further

Everything y can replace. Three kinds of group, and only these:

A place you come from is not y but en: Tu viens de Lyon ? — J'en viens. And y never replaces a person — for people the verb decides, and the verbs are sorted on Personne ou chose.

Minimal pairs with one verb. Croire shows the whole system at once: je le crois (I believe him — direct), j'y crois (I believe in it — à + idea), je crois en lui (I believe in him — a person keeps the preposition).

The errors to watch.

In Russian там ("there") is optional and free in position; French y is required once the place is known and sits in a fixed slot before the verb: Tu vas au marché ? — Oui, j'y vais, not oui, je vais.
