Here is a little word that trips up even careful writers. In « Je crains qu'il ne pleuve », the ne is not a negation. The sentence means I fear it will rain — not I fear it won't. This is the ne explétif: a stylistic survivor from older French, kept alive in the registre soutenu, carrying no negative value at all. Delete it and the meaning is unchanged; it merely marks the register.

It surfaces after a fixed set of triggers — verbs of fearing and a family of subordinating conjunctions:

The crucial skill is telling the explétif from a real negation, because the minimal pair changes the meaning completely:

• « Je crains qu'il ne vienne » — explétif; the speaker dreads his arrival.
• « Je crains qu'il ne vienne pas » — true ne… pas; the speaker dreads his absence.

The tell is the pas. A lone ne after one of these triggers is explétif; a ne… pas is genuine. English collapses both onto "I'm afraid he'll come" versus "I'm afraid he won't come," so anglophones have to learn to read the bare ne as weightless. Russian, with no equivalent, meets it fresh.

One reassurance: the ne explétif is optional and marked. It is correct and tastes literary, but omitting it is never a mistake, and everyday speech drops it freely. The practice separates the explétif from negation, picks a triggering conjunction, resolves the ne / ne… pas minimal pair, and pins down its register status.
