La relecture, passe 1 : la chasse aux accents

You cannot proofread for everything at once — nobody can. The method this unit opens is the three-pass relecture: sweep your copy three separate times, each pass hunting exactly one error family. Pass 1 accents, pass 2 agreements (PE-11), pass 3 verb endings (PE-12). Five minutes at the end of the exam, budgeted, mechanical.

Pass 1 reads the copy looking only at diacritics — accents aigus, graves, circonflexes, and the cédille. In « Il a repondu a ma lettre des la semaine derniere », pass 1 fixes répondu, à, dès, dernière and touches nothing else. In « Les employés motivé ont recu une prime », it fixes reçu — and deliberately walks past motivé, because agreement belongs to pass 2. That restraint is the whole method: one target per pass is what makes each pass fast and reliable.

Two accents carry meaning, so pass 1 gets two micro-tests. a / à: replace with avait — if the sentence survives, it is the verb a, no accent. ou / où: place takes the accent grave (la ville où je travaille); choice does not (thé ou café).
