Négation et quantité dans la prose formelle : ne… que, la plupart des

Two machines of formal prose, both cheap to learn and both heavily rewarded in the grammaire line of the B2 grid.

First, restriction with ne… que. It means seulement, nothing more: « Le magasin n'a proposé qu'un avoir de dix euros » — the shop offered only a store credit. Nothing is negated; something is limited. The scope rule matters: the restriction lands on what follows que. « Le service ne rembourse que les billets non utilisés » restricts the object — only unused tickets get refunded, everything else is out. In a complaint letter this construction states a grievance with surgical precision, which is exactly the tone the genre wants.

Second, quantity subjects and their agreement. After la plupart des + plural noun, the verb goes plural: « La plupart des salariés sont favorables au projet » — never est favorable, even though la plupart looks singular. Same behaviour for la majorité des in most contexts. Russian speakers tend to trust the head noun (большинство + singular verb); French trusts the plural complement.

One trap closes the unit: the double negation. « Je n'ai pas reçu aucune réponse » stacks pas on aucune and cancels itself into ungrammaticality. Keep one negative word per clause: « Je n'ai reçu aucune réponse ». And when you want an attenuated, elegant negative, ne… guère (= hardly) is the soutenu option: « Cette solution ne convainc guère les experts ».
