Les déclencheurs du subjonctif I : il faut que, vouloir que, avant que
P50.verb-systems.03 · Audience: guest, language-pro, it-ml
Unité GR-25 · campagne 9 · il faut que tu sois là : le mode se déclenche.
The subjunctive is not a tense you choose — it is a mode that certain expressions trigger mechanically in the clause after que. Russian speakers hold a hidden advantage here: the чтобы + past pattern (я хочу, чтобы он пришёл) marks exactly the same territory. Where Russian writes чтобы, French almost always wants a subjunctive.
This unit installs the three highest-frequency triggers:
| Trigger | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| il faut que | necessity | Il faut que tu sois là à huit heures. |
| vouloir que | will / desire | Je veux qu'il vienne avec nous. |
| avant que | time not yet reached | Finis ton café avant que le train ne parte. |
The forms you need at B2 are a small set. For regular verbs, take the ils-stem of the present and add -e, -es, -e, -ions, -iez, -ent: ils partent → que je parte, que nous partions; 2nd-group verbs keep their -iss-: que vous remplissiez. Then four irregulars carry most of real usage: être → que je sois, avoir → que j'aie, aller → que j'aille, savoir → que je sache (plus faire → fasse, pouvoir → puisse).
Three habits to build now:
- Same subject → infinitive, not subjunctive. Je veux partir, never je veux que je parte. The que-clause only appears when the subjects differ.
- Avant que often adds a decorative ne: avant que le train ne parte. It is not a negation — formal style inserts it, and DELF texts love it.
- Hear the trigger, not the meaning. Il faut que fires the subjunctive even when the fact seems certain.
The practice drills the three triggers across regular, -iss-, and irregular stems.
