Le conditionnel passé : regret, reproche, information non confirmée au passé

The conditionnel passé is mechanically simple: take the auxiliary in the conditionnel présent and add the past participle — j'aurais aimé, nous serions partis. What needs installing is not the form but the three jobs it does.

Here is the trap for Russian speakers: бы covers both French conditionals. Я бы хотел maps to je voudrais (present wish, still possible) and to j'aurais voulu (past regret, too late). Russian lets the context decide; French forces you to choose the compound form whenever the window has closed. If the regretted moment is behind you, the auxiliary must carry the past: j'aurais voulu être là hier, never je voudrais être là hier.

Two refinements complete the picture:

1. The reproach formula is frozen. Tu aurais dû + infinitive — the devoir moves to the conditionnel passé, the reproached action stays an infinitive. Same with tu aurais pu m'appeler (a softer reproach).
2. The journalistic reading extends GR-27. You met le président serait malade for unconfirmed present facts; the past version simply compounds: l'accord aurait été signé hier. Same distance, one tense back.

Être-verbs behave as always: nous serions partis, elle serait venue, with agreement on the participle.
