La nominalisation : condenser pour convaincre

Nominalisation turns a verb or an adjective into a noun — and turns a dragging clause into a compact subject. « Le fait que les loyers augmentent inquiète les habitants » becomes « L'augmentation des loyers inquiète les habitants »: same meaning, four words shorter, and unmistakably written French. Correctors read controlled nominalisation as a marker of the formal written register — it is one of the cheapest style upgrades available at B2.

The productive suffixes to know:

• -tion / -sion: supprimer → la suppression, interdire → l'interdiction, augmenter → l'augmentation, contester → la contestation
• -ment: développer → le développement, changer → le changement
• -té / -eur: from adjectives — gratuit → la gratuité, lent → la lenteur

Two places where nominalisation is practically mandatory. The objet line of a formal letter is a nominal phrase by convention: « Objet : contestation de la facture n° 2044-B », never « Objet : je conteste la facture… ». And the annonce de plan compresses beautifully: « Nous examinerons d'abord les effets économiques de cette interdiction, puis ses limites pratiques ».

Now the counter-lesson, because the tool cuts both ways: stacked nominalisations suffocate. « La prise en considération de la nécessité de la diminution de la consommation d'énergie est une évidence » is technically grammatical and completely unreadable. When the -tions pile up, deflate one back into a verb: « Il faut, à l'évidence, consommer moins d'énergie. » One nominalisation per sentence does elegant work; three do damage.

The practice drills the transformation in both directions: clause to noun for concision, and noun-pile back to verb when the sentence stops breathing.
