Le dénouement implicite : ni oui ni non

P44.b2-listening.06 · Audience: guest, language-pro, it-ml · Prerequisites: Les marqueurs de position : certes… mais, franchement

Unité CO-04 · campagne 2 · ce qui est dit sans être dit.

French dialogue — interviews, negotiations, office corridors — is a machine for answering questions without answering them. The B2 exam loves the moment where a speaker is asked a yes/no question and delivers neither: Disons qu'ils ne les ont pas invalidés. Your task is to hear the réponse implicite.

Three signals to train:

  1. The evasive opener. Disons que…, on va dire que…, écoute… — the speaker is negotiating with the truth. What follows is packaging; the facts inside it (elle a regardé le prix des appartements là-bas) carry the real answer.
  2. The compliment that refuses. Praise plus a maintenant / la question est de savoir si… clause (J'ai beaucoup de respect pour son parcours. Maintenant…) is a polite no. The warmer the preamble, the colder the verdict.
  3. The status report that says "almost". Il avance, en principe, il ne manque que… — not yes, not no: a probability. Exam options will offer you the flat oui, the flat non, and the calibrated middle. Take the middle only when the audio built it.

Answer with what was established, never with what was literally pronounced.
