B2 keeps your register consistent; C1 asks you to shift register at will. The spoken registre soutenu — a soutenance, a formal presentation, a serious debate — is a set of concrete, hearable markers:
- La négation complète: je ne pense pas — the dropped ne of everyday speech is the first thing a formal ear notices.
- Nous over on: nous constatons que..., and inversion in questions: Pourrait-on dire que... ?
- Terms recherchés: néanmoins over mais bon, envisager over penser à, considérable over énorme.
- Zéro tics: euh, bah, du coup, genre — silence beats a filler in this register.
The exercise: deliver a two-minute formal opening statement on the topic below, holding every marker end-to-end. One dropped ne or one du coup is a reason for another take.

Present and defend a viewpoint: Ouverture formelle d'une table ronde : « L'université doit-elle être gratuite pour tous ? » Prononcez une déclaration liminaire de deux minutes en registre soutenu — négation complète, nous, aucune familiarité.
